Get a behind-the-scenes look at NAVAIR Point Mugu, located just west of Los Angeles at Naval Base Ventura County. The 36,000 square-mile sea range offers enormous geographic diversity including vast ocean, deep water ports, and protected islands within restricted air space.
The tour will start at the Naval Air Station Point Mugu Archive Center and Storage Facility, home to a large collection of air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles and electronics countermeasures equipment. You will then head over to X-30 Unmanned Aerial System, considered the unmanned aerial system capital of the west coast and the only site on the west coast where drones can be tested and controlled. Next, you’ll check out the E-2C Hawkeye squadron, where you will get up close and personal with a carrier-capable tactical airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft.
After lunch with the commanding officer of the air station, you will view the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS), which are military C-130 transport planes that can be converted to serve as firefighting air tankers. The C-130 can carry 3,000 gallons of fire retardant. The CAL FIRE S-2T air tanker carries 1200 gallons.
