Garmin expands reach with Fltplan.com acquisition

No financial terms were disclosed for the acquisition, which Garmin said would create “an unmatched portfolio” of products for customers of its aviation business unit.

Southbury, Connecticut-based Fltplan.com’s flight planning website covers the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Panama, and parts of Venezuela and Colombia. It is “one of the largest flight planning companies in the world, creating more than 6.3 million flight plans annually,” Garmin said in a news release that announced the acquisition. Fltplan.com also offers the free FltPlan Go app for iOS, Android, and Windows; and a variety of premium flight management services.

“We are excited to have the FltPlan team join the Garmin family,” said Phil Straub, Garmin executive vice president and managing director of aviation. “We look forward to combining the comprehensive flight planning and flight management services available from FltPlan with our robust lineup of products and services to provide an unmatched portfolio of end-to-end services to our customers.”

Fltplan.com founder Ken Wilson said leveraging Garmin’s experience and leadership would help expand and grow Fltplan.com’s offerings and its geographic reach. The Southbury facility “will continue to support the complete portfolio of FltPlan.com and FltPlan Go, and will work to integrate those services into the Garmin aviation ecosystem,” the announcement noted.

In March, AOPA reported that a strategic relationship between Fltplan.com and Garmin had allowed users who fly with Garmin avionics to download flight plans wirelessly to Garmin panel-mounted avionics via the Garmin Connext system.
