AOPA Fly-In attendees help develop runway safety best practices

The runway safety tips “are offered as good practices toward avoiding runway incursions and surface incidents during airport and ground operations,” the guide says.

Tips are broken into four categories: situational awareness, surface operations, crew resource management, and knowledge and skills. The 15 tips for situational awareness focus on planning, active listening, and active scanning. The surface operations category offers 19 recommendations to help pilots focus on taxiing, communication, and managing distractions. Six tips offer advice on how to use all available resources in the crew resource management section, while five additional pointers provide ideas for keeping aviation knowledge and skills sharp.

“AOPA Fly-In participants at the Runway Safety Roundup not only walked away improving their own knowledge, but the results of their brainstorming can now help hundreds of thousands of other pilots,” said AOPA Air Safety Institute Executive Director Richard McSpadden. “I encourage everyone to forward this list of best practices to the aviators in their community.”

The AOPA Fly-Ins include several educational seminars that are free to attendees during the main event on Saturdays. Attendees also can participate in intensive, hands-on workshops on Fridays for a fee, or take part in fly-outs after the event to enjoy new aviation adventures.

“We strive to provide educational programming that will encourage pilots to learn new skills and safely expand their flying experiences,” said Chris Eads, AOPA director of outreach and events. “The results of attendees' collaboration with the FAA at the Camarillo Fly-In demonstrate just how far-reaching the safety information at these events can be.”

The free seminars, paid workshops, fly-outs, and more will be offered at AOPA’s 2018 Fly-Ins in Missoula, Montana, June 15 and 16; Santa Fe, New Mexico, Sept. 14 and 15; Carbondale, Illinois, Oct. 5 and 6; and Gulf Shores, Alabama, Oct. 26 and 27.
