CAP awards private pilot scholarships

Five cadets learning to fly in Delaware

Five Civil Air Patrol cadets are learning to fly this summer at Delaware State University in Dover.

The five students are recipients of CAP’s National Advanced Flight Academy private pilot scholarships, created in 2016 to expand the flying opportunities of CAP’s youngest members.

The cadets began training June 27. The program is expected to take six to eight weeks.

The cadets are Duncan Campbell and Riley Campbell, both of Frederick, Maryland; Erin Dundas of Rutland, Vermont; Wyatt Hartman of Sparrows Point, Maryland; and James Kidd of Southwest Ranches, Florida.

“We’re proud to name this first class of young CAP pilots receiving an early opportunity at advanced flight,” said Lt. Col. Leslie Vazquez, CAP’s aviation industry liaison. She said she hopes the program will continue.

CAP used corporate funds to finance the scholarships, according to National Commander Maj. Gen. Joe Vazquez, who spoke to the (Delaware) State Capital Daily. He said he hopes CAP can continue awarding scholarships, with the goal of reaching as many as 500 per year.
