Question of the Week

Question

If a certificated flight instructor is giving a flight lesson in an airplane with a student pilot, which class of medical is required for the instructor?

Answer

A flight instructor must possess a third class medical certificate or higher in order to exercise the privileges of a flight instructor certificate while acting as pilot in command or as a required crewmember. If the flight instructor is not acting as pilot in command or as a required crewmember, then no medical certificate is required. This leaves flight instructors with several scenarios in which they may provide flight training without a medical certificate. For a more complete explanation, check out this article from the AOPA Foundation's Air Safety Institute.
