Private airfield owners in Michigan are a step closer to having liability protection for aviation activities now that the state’s House of Representatives has passed House Bill 5178. The bill, which passed by a vote of 62-47 on June 3, goes to the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration.
AOPA officials testified in person several times during the committee process in the Michigan House. AOPA also joined the Michigan Private Airstrip Owners Association and the Recreational Aviation Foundation in meeting with several legislators in the House and will do the same when the bill is taken up in the Senate. By having liability protection, additional aviation activity will occur at private airstrips.
“Working with great groups like the Michigan Private Airstrip Owners Association and the Recreational Aviation Foundation has given the bill the extra push needed to get the bill passed this session,” said AOPA Great Lakes Regional Manager Bryan Budds. “We look forward to passage of the bill when the legislature reconvenes later this year.”
