New aviation scholarships available

Aviation organizations recognize the importance of investing in the future of aviation by offering scholarships. Each month, AOPA covers new scholarships that are open to applicants and highlights success stories of past scholarship winners. Share these opportunities with those you know who are in training for an aviation-related field.

Scholarship opportunities

Angel MedFlight Worldwide Air Ambulance and the Arizona Business Aviation Association  are offering a $3,000 scholarship for tuition at an Arizona college or university. Applicants must be enrolled in an aviation degree program. Applications are due by July 11 and will cover fall tuition.

The Commemorative Air Force’s Wings Over Houston Airshow is accepting applications for its 2014-2015 scholarship program. It will award up to five scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 each, to college students who have demonstrated academic potential, leadership, and extracurricular involvement, and are pursuing degrees associated with a career in aviation, aeronautics, or aerospace. The deadline to apply is July 1, and winners will be notified in August.

LadiesLoveTaildraggers is offering tailwheel endorsement scholarship, valued up to $1,850, to a woman who is at least 21 years old and holds at least a sport pilot certificate; the application deadline is June 15.

Scholarship winners

Pensacola Catholic High seniors Hailey Bates and Emon Smith have been awarded the 2013-2014 Wrong Brothers Flight Training Scholarship. The award was created by alumni David McCartney and Kenny Brown, who own the Wrong Brothers Flight Training Wing. The scholarship will pay for the flight time and supplies needed to complete their FAA private pilot rating.  

Grace Huseth, of Tucker, Ga., and Michael Keck, of Oshkosh, Wis., have both won the 2014 EAA/ Daher-Socata International Scholarship. Interns spend five weeks at Daher-Socata’s Tarbes facility in France. They then go to the EAA Air Academy in Oshkosh, where they will help Daher-Socata during AirVenture. The scholarship includes travel, lodging, work experience, and  a side trip to the Airbus facility in Toulouse.

WTS International, the association for the professional advancement of women in transportation, has awarded seven scholarships. One was awarded to a high school student, one was for a junior college student, four were for undergraduates, and one was for a graduate student. Winners will be recognized at an awards banquet on May 15 during the 2014 WTS Annual Conference in Portland, Ore.

Brett Merboth of Nome, Alaska, has won the 2014 Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship, given by the Alaska Air Carriers Association. The $3,000 scholarship was underwritten by Crowley Maritime Corp.’s petroleum distribution.
