Five random aviation apps

The last time there I highlighted random apps was May 1. This week, we look at apps for fuel calculators, checklists, and fixed-base operator services. We even highlight an air traffic control game. These are not endorsements of any app.

Fuel Flite - Fuel Tankering Calculator (free in iTunes)—This app, optimized for the iPhone 5, allows users to determine just how much fuel to buy at an airport. In the free version, users can save two aircraft profiles and three airports or two flight legs in a calculation.

SkyChartsPro ($19.99 in iTunes)—This iPhone/iPad app offers geo-referenced VFR, IFR, and terminal area charts. It also provides facility directories and approach plates in nine geographic regions. If you use the GPS capability, you also can get moving maps and terrain clearance information.

CheckMate (free in iTunes and Google Play)—This smartphone/tablet app allows users to personalize specific checklists for their aircraft. In-app purchases start at $14.99. Users have access to 60 aircraft types. Data is Web-based, where it can be synchronized with a smartphone.

AirNav FBO (free on iTunes)—Users of this iPhone/iPad app can get fuel prices, allowing them to plan fuel stops along their route, and search multiple airports. Users also can update fuel prices, write comments about FBOs, or contact FBOs with one tap.

Flight Control HD ($4.99 in iTunes)—Users can spend hours playing this air traffic controller iPad game. The point is to drag aircraft to their proper landing zones quickly and safely. Users can play alone, with others online, or with another player via iPad.

Please continue to send your Google Play and iTunes recommendations. Developers, I’m working on a column about app updates, so if you’ve made any changes, please let me know. The complete list of apps I’ve reviewed since October 2012 is in AOPA’s online archive.
