Cirrus Aircraft launched an Apple iOS-based interactive flight manual for its pilots and training facilities, the company announced Jan. 21.

The aircraft manufacturer, based in Duluth, Minnesota, said the Interactive Flight Operations Manual (iFOM) contains “everything a pilot needs at his or her fingertips,” and is navigated by a simple pinch, touch, or swipe of the screen.

Checklists, flight maneuver outlines, and flight profiles are easily accessible; pilots can create personalized study cards; and the iFOM updates automatically, “similar to applications on the iTunes App Store.”

“Safety is in our DNA at Cirrus Aircraft, and as instructors, we are given the most important job of training and advising pilots to be as safe as possible,” Travis Klumb, Cirrus Aircraft director of flight operations and training, said in a news release. “Cirrus Approach and the introduction of the iFOM are changing the way pilots look at flight training and addressing the time restrictions people face today, all while taking advantage of today’s enhanced multi-media opportunities.”

The company said its Cirrus Approach training system “leverages modern eLearning technologies to prepare pilots for training before they enter either ground school or an aircraft and enhances recurrent training as well.”

The new interactive flight operations manual “features 21 videos, 34 interactive modules, in-text hyperlinks to pertinent charts and data, easy-to-navigate chapters and expanded descriptions for all standard and most emergency procedures,” the company said.

The multi-touch iBook is designed for use on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple computer platforms and is available on iTunes for $39.99 and for purchase anywhere iBooks are available.
