The International Organization of Women Pilots (The Ninety-Nines) has revamped its former New Pilot scholarship to make the award progressive so that recipients receive funds after completing milestones in their training.
Now known as the Fly Now scholarship, the program is open to associate members of The Ninety-Nines who demonstrate a need for financial assistance to become certificated pilots. Up to $3,000 will be provided toward completion of a recreational pilot, sport pilot, or private pilot certificate, or non-U.S. equivalent, in any aircraft.
Recipients will receive specific amounts as they complete training milestones: passing the FAA or equivalent knowledge test, if not completed at time of application ($500), first solo ($1,000), long solo cross-country ($1,000), and receiving FAA or equivalent flight certificate ($500). A current medical certificate is required for private pilot applicants.
Key to success of the award is the student pilot’s relationship with her The Ninety-Nines chapter, the organization said. Applicants must have a formal mentor to help guide and support them during training.
Applicants must submit all information to their chapter by Sept. 15. The deadline for the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund to receive the approved application is Sept. 30. Recipients will be notified in October. Complete application requirements are available on the website.
